CANVAS
Canvas items are one of the most interesting aspects of
Thompson collecting. You can learn so much about how
various groups were deciding to use the Thompson.
Shown at the left is a "black or dark blue" web two cell
pouch. The lift the dot type snaps are nickel plated. This
darkened canvas gear was meant to be used for night
time operations. The nickeled snaps suggests use around
sea water to help prevent corrosion. I have now seen two
different versions, the two cell as shown and a five cell
version. It is easy to let your mind wander into thinking
commando raids at dawn etc, but a lot of this gear was
for coastal patrols and ship boarding parties. Even
though the commando aspect is more fun to dream
about.
Homemade canvas gear is also seen on a regular basis.
Often times the police or prisons buying TSMGs saw no
reason to buy the canvas gear when they had prisoners
and canvas materials laying around. So often the pris-
oners made the gear for the guards.
Shown below are two such examples. First the crudely
made L drum pouch and the very crudely made box magazine five cell pouch. The snaps are
all marked with the name "Sleco" and are brass that has been painted black. This kind of
