Richard
Shimer was also a very accomplished pistol shooter. He served on several
marksmanship teams , during and after WWII, winning many state
championships.
Richard Shimer retired from AO in 1945 and went to work for the state of Connecticut as head of a program to provide education to the returning WWII veterans. However, he continued his pistol shooting, which would lead him to his next occupation. Through contacts Richard had through his competitive pistol shooting, he was recruited into the FBI. We all know that J. Edgar Hoover loved to have very good pistol shots in the Bureau. Upon graduation he served one year in Philadelphia, Pa., two years in Cleveland and seventeen years in the Sandusky, Ohio Resident Agency. Richard Shimer, when interviewed by the newspapers upon his retirement from the FBI after twenty years, stated that his most memorable case was when he wasn't on duty. He managed to witness a robbery of a grocery store and was able to describe the crooks and the getaway car to local police, who made the arrest. Richard Shimer retired from the FBI in 1967. He continued to serve his community on various state and regional advisory councils. Richard Shimer passed away in December 1996. What an interesting life he lead. |
