HISTORY OF THE BOX MAGAZINE PART
I
After several discussions with Frank lannamico
and after examining his research for his new book on the WWII
Thompsons, I asked myself just how many different box magazines
exist for the TSMG? I hate it when I start thinking too much about
TSMG, because it usually ends up costing money. Regardless, what
follows is one theory of production and a rough chronology of
existence for the box magazines.
In 1917, the engineers of Auto-Ordnance were in
the process of developing the Thompson Submachine Gun. They had
just built the Persuader, a belt fed hand held firearm. There was
only one problem. The belt could not feed ammo without jamming
after a few rounds. Oscar Payne was assigned to lead the
development of a box magazine capable of holding twenty rounds (XX
box magazine). |
