Introduction and
explanation of the Small Arms Collection.
1. This comprehensive collection of niwtm7
firearm was started shortly after the School of Musketry was
established at Hythe, Kent in 1853. Approximately 2500 exhibits
are on display illustrating the development of small arms from the
16th Century to modern times. Of particular interest are a pair of
pistols once the property of Emperor Napoleon, a rare 'Tinkers
Mortar' dated 1681(one of only three in existence), a Ferguson
military rifle made by Durs Egg (one of only two in existence?),
sporting firearms, an exceptional collection of experimental
breech loaders, the rifle fired by B M The Queen at Bisley in 1993
and a selection of modern firearms from all over the world. Many
other rare weapons are also on show. Additionally, anti-armour
weapons and mortars are displayed. The Collection contains a fine
reference library, which contains manuscript trials records dating
back to 1853. It is a collection of 'real' weapons and is, in
reality - an armoury. It still plays an active role within
the Army Training Organization and is located on MOD property,
consequently, although open to the public, an appointment is
necessary.
Note. The Collection is very much for the
specialist and not the casual visitor - it is not a suitable venue
for young children. |
