MAGAZINE FILLERS
In order to facilitate the loading of Thompson Submachine gun box type magazines, two types of Magazine Fillers TI and T2, were developed and tested. The TI Magazine Filler (fig. 214), hand-operated, lever type, was developed by a member of the U.S. Marine Corps, and the T2 Magazine Filler (fig. 215), crank operated type, by a member of the Military Police, Fort Custer. Both items, as submitted, were redesigned to improve functioning and ease of use. The Baltimore -Enamel and Novelty Company fabricated six samples of the TI Model and the Boehm Pressed Steel Company, six samples of the T2. Samples of the T1 model were distributed for test to Headquarters, Amy Air Forces, Ordnance Department Board, Armored Board, Cavalry Board, and the US. Marine Corps Equipment Board for informative and test purposes. Results of these tests were as follows: a. Ordnance Board - The TI Filler should be used in situations where individuals must load more than six dozen magazines continuously, otherwise, hand loading is satisfactory. b. Headquarters, Army Air Forces - In view of the fact that Amy Air Forces use of the Thompson Submachine gun is limited, there is at the present time no requirement for the magazine filler. c. Armored and Cavalry Boards - Recomrnended that no consideration be given to the adoption of the TI Filler and the use of Thompson submachine gun fillers be considered unnecessary. (This recommendation obviated the necessity for test of the T2 Magazine Filler.)
In view of the above recommendations, it was made a matter of record in February 1944, that no further consideration be given to any type hand-operated filler for the Thompson submachine gun box type magazines. |
